The sun is an important part of Gisborne's life. Gisborne was the first city in the world to see the first sunrise of the new millennium. Its slogan is that Gisborne is the First City of the Sun. It seemed most appropriate to take this imagery and incorporate it into the school name. Rather than any concern for the sun we know that the most important thing is that the Son is Risen. Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour and it is through His death on the cross and the resurrection that we are saved from sin. So through the name Sonrise we gain our connection with the city in which we live, but give the message to those people that Jesus is risen.

The logo of the school incorporates these themes with a symbolic sunrise at the foot of an empty cross.
