Dear Parents/Caregivers

Tena Koutou Katoa

A Ministry of Education audit of our Annual Return of Students as at 1 March 2009 and

1 July 2009 was recently completed. The audit disclosed that the roll return was correctly stated (meaning, I did not claim for students who was not on our roll) and a review of the school’s staffing usage showed that staffing was well managed by the Principal and that the bank staffing was within entitlement. A review of the staffing units allocated to the school identified that the correct number of units were allocated to staff.

From this audit the school has now been granted full approval (with 1 condition) to use electronic attendance registers.

Unexplained absences which are initially coded (?) which is a temporary code must be followed up as soon as possible and when the absence is explained this is accurately coded on the SMS (student management system). If there is no explanation for the absence then the absence should be coded (T), Truant, not justifiable absence.

This is the reason why we have to insist that you notify the school if your child is going to be absent and please do not be offended if we ask the reason for your child’s absence. If we do not have a reason it is coded as Truant and you can expect a visit from the Gisborne Truancy Officer if they notice that there is a trend of a student regularly being absent from school without a justifiable reason. (Just as a matter of interest, the highest ‘truancy’ rates is from the 5 year olds. Mum usually decides that their baby needs to have a day off school).
