Board of Trustee Elections

Three years had passed very rapidly and it is again time for Board of Trustee elections.

Our returning officer is Bev Coombes and she will be responsible for all election communication and correspondence. In the meantime I have included some information for your perusal.

Call for nominations by 15 March.

Nominations close on noon 23 April.

Voting papers distributed on 28 April.

Voting day is 7 May.

Count votes on 13 May.

New Board takes office on 14 May.

What is a school board of trustees?

The BOT is a crown entity. It is the employer of all school staff and sets the school’s overall strategic direction. The school’s principal is the board’s ‘chief executive’ and manages the school operation in line with the board’s policies.

What do trustees do?

The BOT is entrusted to work on behalf of the school community.

Enhancing student achievement is our focus, through an emphasis on strategic leadership.

The BOT is proactive in its operations, decision making and does not involve itself in the administrative details of the day-to-day running of the school.

  • Work with the principal and consult with staff, students and the community.
  • Set the educational goals and strategic direction of the school.
  • Monitor progress and let parents know how the school is progressing against its annual targets and how well students are achieving.
  • Decide how the school’s funding will be spent.
  • Support the principal and the development of all staff.

What sort of skills do trustees need?

Trustees are active leaders in their schools and need a balance of skills and experiences. They need to work well in a team, be able to put plans in place for the school’s future, ask challenging questions and have good communication skills. It helps to have an understanding of financial matters and the education sector, and experience in managing people.

Who can become a trustee?

Parents, caregivers and people from the wider community can be nominated for election to a school board.

If you are putting your name forward as a nomination, we are asking that you write a profile (no longer than an A4 page) about yourself and the skills you can bring to the board, accompanied by a photo. These are to be emailed to Bev Coombes on info@sonrise.school.nz

We have new school families and this will help people know who they are voting for. This will be greatly appreciated.
