Dear Parents/Caregivers
Tena Koutou Katoa
A very warm WELCOME to all our students, families and our staff. We extend an extra special WELCOME to all our new students and their families. We sincerely hope that you will settle in quickly and become part of the Sonrise community.
As you would have noticed, there are still tasks to be finished off at school regarding the new classroom and tech block. Our school grounds needs to be resurfaced after the building extensions, and sadly the lawns had been vandalised last night by somebody using it as a racing track.
I would like to commend you, our parents and caregivers, that your children look immaculate. They are all in their school uniform and are well groomed. Our senior students look so good in their new uniforms. They are all excited to be back at school and have come prepared to learn. Thank you again for ensuring that they came to school with all their necessary stationery and ready for learning.
As you would be aware that there is huge controversy regarding the National Standards on the news. We are not in disagreement with the Ministry. Our concern is around the timeframe and up to this point we have had no professional development or training around the National Standards. I had attended two National Standards meetings in our region and it focused on policy only. The Ministry is only now offering workshops on how the National Standards are to be implemented in schools. These workshops are being offered to principals only. Here again is an issue because the teachers need to be fully informed as they are the ones having to work with the standards. I will keep you informed as things become more clear and transparent.
